Exciting Developments at Swede Hollow Park

Preparing for a Renovated Staircase

Engineering and geotechnical studies are underway to lay the groundwork for the renovation of the iconic staircase that connects the Upper Bluff to the valley floor. With over 150 steps, this staircase is not only a vital access point but also a favorite fitness destination for parkgoers. The studies will help ensure the staircase is safe, sustainable, and ready to meet the needs of visitors for years to come.

A New Bike Trail Connection

Cyclists have long sought an easier way to reach the Bruce Vento Regional Trail from Swede Hollow Park’s entrance at Greenbrier Street. This winter’s studies will also evaluate the feasibility of a new bike trail link that follows a historic route—a private driveway once used by the Hamm family to connect their mansion on the bluff to the Hamm’s Brewery below. The proposed link will provide a seamless connection for cyclists coming off the nearby Greenway Trail, creating a safer and more enjoyable journey, with potential stops at Saint Paul Brewing or Eleven Wells Distillery to savor the area’s rich history.

What’s a Geotechnical Study?

Geotechnical studies assess the soil and subsurface conditions of an area. Engineers analyze this data to ensure that new structures—like stairs or trails—are designed to withstand the environment and remain stable over time. These studies are crucial for safety and long-term durability.

Supported by Generous Funding

These pivotal studies are made possible through the support of the McNeely Foundation, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation and the Saint Paul Parks Conservancy. Their commitment brings us closer to realizing the community’s vision for Swede Hollow Park.

Stay tuned for updates on these transformative projects and new park activation activities as we prepare for an exciting future at Swede Hollow Park.
