Walnut Street Steps Reconstruction

This iconic stairway, connecting Summit Avenue near the James J. Hill House to Irvine Avenue below, has been closed due to wear and environmental challenges. Its restoration not only preserves an important historic landmark but also strengthens connections between Saint Paul’s neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces. In addition to pedestrians going from Summit Ave to the street below, the staircase has also been a favorite fitness challenge destination.

Rethos, a nonprofit dedicated to historic preservation, is serving as the project’s fiscal sponsor and lead facilitator. The Saint Paul Parks Conservancy is focusing on securing outdoor and fitness related grants for the project.

Meanwhile, the West 7th/Fort Road Federation is actively engaging the West 7th Street neighborhood to ensure the project reflects local voices and priorities. “This stairway has been a vital link in our community’s history,” noted Julia McColley, Executive Director of the Federation.

Community involvement is at the heart of this restoration effort. Regular public meetings will keep residents informed, and an advisory committee will be formed to provide input. Interested community members can apply to join the committee through Rethos’s website.

The Walnut Street Stairway restoration is a celebration of Saint Paul’s rich history and a commitment to its vibrant future. Together, these organizations aim to reopen the stairway as a beautiful, accessible, and historically significant feature of the city.
