Wacouta Commons Park Tot Lot will bring joy to hundreds of neighborhood children.
Building a new tot lot in winter may seem counterintuitive, but two factors drove the timeline at Waoucta Commons Park: when materials would be available and the need to protect the park’s trees. “After making such a significant investment in radial planting for maximum tree viability in the park, we wanted to make sure the weight of construction vehicles wouldn’t damage the root systems,” says Michael-jon Pease, Saint Paul Parks Conservancy Executive Director. “Happily, the timing of equipment delivery meant we could easily push construction until after the ground had frozen to provide more support for delivery vehicles and trees.”
The project is at 80% completion now, and with the delivery of wood chips, structures can be used this winter. In addition, the concrete pad for a new Foursquare court and sidewalk chart art area will be poured in spring. The project is just a few hundred dollars from being fully funded. Donate today!
