New Sculpture and Playground for the Midway

We’re excited to celebrate two transformative additions to the United Village superblock near Allianz Field: the unveiling of “The Calling,” a stunning new sculpture by Scottish artist Andy Scott, and the opening of a vibrant, inclusive playground that fills a long-standing need in the Midway and Rondo neighborhoods.

“The Calling” stands proudly at the southeast corner of Snelling and University Avenues. This nearly 30-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture, with a wingspan of almost 90 feet, captures the spirit of community and connection. The nearby playground, known as PK’s Place, is already making an impact by serving about 4,000-5,000 young visitors every month, welcoming children from surrounding neighborhoods and families visiting Allianz Field.

This major development addresses an equity gap by providing accessible public space for a community that is 28% people of color, with 19% under the age of 18 and 27% of households living at or below the poverty level. The playground’s inclusive design ensures children of all ages and many abilities have a place to play, helping to make this privately owned public space a vital resource for the community.

Together, these projects represent a new chapter of opportunity for the Rondo/Midway neighborhoods. The Conservancy is proud to recognize Dr. Bill Maguire as an “Equal Play Champion” for his investment in play and for turning what was once a blighted area into a source of delight for Saint Paul youth.
