If you ask a room full of adults about their favorite childhood memories, the answers usually sound the same. It’s the thrill of finally climbing to the top of the monkey bars, the casual ease of making a lifelong friend over a shared swing set, or the absolute freedom of playing make-believe until the streetlights came on.
Parks are the quiet background to our earliest milestones. They are where kids figure out who they are, where parents catch their breath, and where neighbors actually become a community.
That is exactly why the effort to revitalize Dousman Park is about so much more than replacing outdated plastic and steel.

A Small Space with a Vital Role
Nestled in Saint Paul’s West Seventh/Fort Road neighborhood, Dousman Park only covers 0.38 acres. It’s small, but it punches well above its weight. For generations, this pocket of green has welcomed local families with its shady trees, simple picnic benches, and modest playground.
But time has caught up with it. After decades of laughter, scraped knees, and countless afternoon adventures, the current playground equipment well beyond its lifespan. To keep serving the neighborhood, it needs a restart.
Moving Beyond the 7-Minute Average
It is easy to dismiss a playground as just a place for kids to burn off extra energy. But the reality is much more critical. Modern childhood has shifted drastically, with recent data showing that today’s children average as little as four to seven minutes of unstructured outdoor play each day.
When public spaces shrink or degrade, that window closes even further. Quality neighborhood parks aren’t a luxury; they are essential infrastructure for childhood development. Outdoor play builds resilience, sparks imagination, and teaches critical problem-solving and social skills that screens simply cannot replicate.
Built by the Neighborhood, for the Neighborhood
The most compelling part of this project won’t be just the final blueprint—it will be how we will get there. This won’t be a top-down installation; it will be a community collaboration.
Local children and families will directly shape the vision through neighborhood engagement and an upcoming Design Day. Professional designers will take those raw ideas and translate them into a safe, innovative space. Then, the neighborhood will get to work. Community volunteers will come together for a three-day community build, quite literally assembling the park with their own hands. It will be a rare chance to create a landmark that truly belongs to everyone who uses it.
How to Help Build It
Turning this vision into a reality requires collective effort, and a major milestone is coming up quickly. The Saint Paul Parks Conservancy is hosting an evening to bring everyone together and cross the finish line.
