Senator Dave Durenberger Tribute

Durenberger’s work on the High Bridge and on behalf of conservation to be honored at Capitol View Park

Former U.S. Senator Dave Durenberger is a towering figure in Minnesota. His friends and family are leading a campaign to honor his work as a prime mover behind the beautiful Smith Avenue High Bridge. Built in 1987 to replace the old structure, the bridge connects Saint Paul’s West Side and West 7th/downtown. The site of the project is Capitol View Park, which overlooks the High Bridge, the Mississippi and the downtown skyline from the city’s West Side. Volunteers have recently turned the park into a communal garden offering free produce and flowers to area residents and food banks.

During his career, the Senator has also been a staunch supporter of conservation, parks and trails, and the Mississippi River. He serves as ex-officio on the board of the Friends of the Parks and Trails of St. Paul and Ramsey County. This $17,500 campaign will create a dedicated seating area and sign about the High Bridge history at Capitol View Park overlooking the High Bridge. This feature will be a centerpiece of the new communal garden supporting the West Side that has been created by community volunteers within the park. Part of the campaign proceeds will provide special support for the communal garden.
