New Playgrounds at Hayden Heights and Linwood

As part of its Equal Play Initiative, the Conservancy is partnering with the national nonprofit Kaboom! to help replace two aging playgrounds this year. The first is at Hayden Heights Rec Center. Hayden Heights anchors a community of more than 31,000 59% of whom are people of color, 33% at or below poverty level. 41% of Hayden Heights households have children.

The other playground project is at Linwood Rec Center through a major partnership with the Summit Hill Association (SHA). SHA hosted many community engagement events and surveys to get input on the playground and surrounding park as part of their Linwood Reimagined initiative. This location, which serves one of the most vibrant pre-school programs at Parks and Rec, serves more than 12,000 diverse residents. Beyond the racial and income demographics, statistics that impact the greater West 7th area include poor Pedestrian Road Network Density, lower than average Life Expectancy at Birth, and a high number of Children with Low Access to Healthy Food.

These projects will have truly meaningful impact on the next generation of children growing up in these neighborhoods. We are currently seeking businesses interested in partnering with contributions and volunteers for the playground build days. Those interested can reach us here. Image courtesy of Kaboom!
