Swede Hollow Woodland Garden Update

Paths are completed and plants are ordered

Plants have been ordered for late May/early June delivery in time for community planting events at Swede Hollow Park. The new aggregate paths were laid out last fall. To avoid spreading any invasive seeds that may still be lurking in the soil, the aggregate paths were built up rather than excavated. That decision also allows for a healthy layer of top soil to be added prior to planting. Invasive Siberian Elm trees that were in the way of the new ADA accessible paths were removed and the remaining historical artifacts from the foundation of the Hamm mansion were protected in order to be feature in the planting design.

Woodland plants include: Bugleweed, Wild Anemone, Columbine, Jack in the Pulpit, Goat’s Beard, Canadian Wild Ginger, False Spirea, Astilbe, Lady Fern, Bergenia, Pink Bergenia, Pennsylvania Sedge, Eastern Star Sedge, Bigroot Geranium, Hellebores, Big Leaf Ligularia, Leopard Plant, Twinflower, Virginia Bluebells, Cinnamon Fern, Rat Stripper, Penstemon, Solomon’s Seal, Lungwort, Bloodroot, Foamflower, Spiderwort, Large Flowered Trillium, Bellwort, Culver’s Root, Common Blue Violet.

Many thanks to Hardenbergh Foundation, McNeely Foundation, the Saint Paul Garden Club and Capital Region Watershed District for the funds to enhance the Woodland Garden. And thanks to Saint Paul Parks and Rec and Urban Roots for providing space to store and stage the plants this spring!
